Anthony Chiarello, President & CEO

Anthony Chiarello, a fourth generation industry veteran with more than 38 years experience in transportation and logistics, is the President and CEO of TOTE.

Chiarello, who joined TOTE (formerly American Shipping Group) in August of 2010, was previously COO and executive vice president of NYK Logistics (Americas), Inc.

Prior to NYK, Chiarello was with the AP Moller/ Maersk organization for 16 years. He held various executive positions at Maersk including President of Maersk Logistics USA Inc.; President of Hudd Distribution; Chairman of Maersk Customs Services; President of Maersk Equipment Service Company, Inc., and Assistant Vice President of Universal Maritime Service Corporation, a previous stevedoring and terminal subsidiary of Maersk. Chiarello also served as a board member of Bridge Terminal Transportation, a Maersk drayage company. Prior to joining AP Moller/Maersk, Chiarello held the position of Deputy Executive Director of the Maryland Port Administration in Baltimore, Maryland.

Chiarello previously served on the Board of Visitors for the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Villanova School of Business, Center for Global Leadership. Other industry involvement includes serving as a board member of the Transportation Institute; board member of CRT (Coalition for Responsible Transportation); past facilitator for the annual AAPA/MARAD/NAWE Terminal Management Training Program; member of the Advisory Board of The United States Maritime Resource Center; and past board member for the Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) at the US Merchant Marine Academy.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University and is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School and the INSEAD Business Institute of Fontainebleau, France. Chiarello lives in Princeton, N.J., with his wife, Christine, a corporate attorney, and is the father of five and grandfather of seven.

Michael B. Holt, Esq. General Counsel, Senior Vice President, and Chief Ethics Officer

Michael Holt has served the transportation logistics industry for 25 years.

Holt, who joined TOTE in late 2011, was previously the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for NYK Group Americas Inc. (NGA). Holt was also the Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Assistant Secretary at NYK Line (North America) Inc.

Holt was the first Chief Compliance Officer at NGA. He designed and implemented the NGA Compliance Program, created the NGA Code of Ethics and was responsible for all of the compliance officers in the NGA group companies. His work for NYK led them to be selected as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere for four consecutive years, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

In his role at TOTE, Holt is also responsible for overseeing all legal matters for TOTE’s independently managed companies.

In early 2012, he helped establish Saltchuk University, TOTE Campus a business practice, legal and ethics training program for TOTE companies.

Holt began his legal career in 1982, working in corporate law and civil litigation for several firms before establishing his own practice, O’Halloran, Holt and Associates, in 1987. He is admitted to the Bars of New Jersey, New York, Supreme Court of the United States, Third Circuit Court of Appeals, Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. In 2013, Holt was selected as a finalist for General Counsel of the Year by NJ Biz (see General Counsel Studio interview). In addition, in both 2013 and 2014, Ethisphere included him in their list of Attorneys Who Matter.

Holt graduated magna cum laude from Providence College in Rhode Island and Seton Hall University Law School in New Jersey. He obtained his MBA from Montclair State University in 2006.

Holt is married with three children and resides in Nutley, New Jersey.

Kevin D. Kendrick, Senior Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer

Kevin D. Kendrick was named Chief Commercial Officer of TOTE in March of 2012, bringing to the organization more than 22 years experience in the transportation and logistics industry.  As CCO, Kendrick is responsible for establishing and driving overall commercial strategy for TOTE operating companies.

Kendrick began his career with the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group in 1991. He was selected for the elite Maersk Management Training Program and began his career as an outside sales representative in St. Louis after graduation.  Later, he expanded Maersk’s presence in the Midwest by opening and managing the company’s Kansas City office. Kendrick continued to advance in sales management and general management for Maersk Inc. before choosing to make the move to the logistics side of the business.

As Regional Director of Maersk Logistics, Kendrick gained valuable experience and a better understanding of customers’ supply chain challenges. He was promoted to Senior Director before being named Vice President of Damco, formerly known as Maersk Logistics. As Vice President of Damco he was responsible for the Southeast and Gulf States, as well as operational execution and commercial growth for all 3PL products.

Kendrick holds a bachelor’s degree from Furman University and currently resides in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Lisa and their three children.

Hugh Simpson, Senior Vice President, CFO

Hugh L. Simpson joined TOTE from an operating company subsidiary, TOTE Maritime Alaska (formerly Totem Ocean Trailer Express), in January of 2012 as Chief Financial Officer. Hugh is currently responsible for corporate accounting and financial services at TOTE, Inc.

At TOTE Maritime Alaska Simpson was responsible for corporate accounting, credit and collections, information technology and organization-wide quality programs.

Simpson came to TOTE Maritime Alaska from Sound Transit in Seattle where he was CFO and Treasurer for seven years. He played an integral role in financing and implementing the construction of the light rail transportation segment in the Puget Sound area. Prior to Sound Transit, Hugh worked for worked for a local municipality, an international distribution company based out of Japan and a medical device manufacturing company located in Texas.

Simpson graduated from the University of Idaho with a BS in Accounting and is a member of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants. Hugh and his family reside in Kent, Washington.

Peter Keller, Executive Vice President

As Executive Vice President of TOTE, Peter I. Keller assists in the oversight of both TOTE Shipholdings and the TOTE Maritime Division of TOTE, which includes TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico (formerly Sea Star Line) and TOTE Maritime Alaska (formerly Totem Ocean Trailer Express).

Keller joined TOTE in February of 2012 as President of TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and has been leading the conversion of the company’s fleet to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Previously he was the Principal of Peter I. Keller and Associates, LLC, a consulting and advisory practice serving the International Maritime Industry.

Keller has extensive experience in Port and Terminal development, Liner Industry activities, Labor relations, Intermodal operations and Supply Chain economics and strategies.  He has also been involved in merger and acquisition strategies and tactics, public private partnership development and has advised many senior Industry executives.

From 2000 until 2010, Mr. Keller was EVP and Chief Operating Officer of NYK Group Americas, Inc.  In this capacity he oversaw policy matters for all the NYK Group operating Companies in North America that included NYK Line, NYK Logistics, Yusen Terminals and Ceres Terminals.  Prior to that assignment he was President of NYK Line (North America) Inc. and a member of the Governing Board of NYK in Tokyo. He is only the second non Japanese nominated to the Governing Board in the 125 year history of NYK and was the first to be named President of NYK Line (North America).

Keller is currently chairman of the board for SEA/LNG, a multi-sector industry coalition focused on the use of LNG as a maritime fuel.

Keller was a member of the Board of Directors of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), the Pacific Maritime Shipping Association and the United States Maritime Exchange (USMX).  He is also a founding father of the Intermodal Transportation Institute of the University of Denver. He served for many years as Chairman of OCEMA, the Ocean Carriers Equipment and Maintenance Association and Founding Chair of Consolidated Chassis Management, LLC (CCM) .

Together with Target Stores and TTSI he was a founder of the Coalition for Responsible Transportation (CRT), now an Industry wide organization committed to environmentally responsible practices across the supply chain.

Keller was inducted into the International Maritime Hall of Fame in 2006 at the United Nations in New York.

Sharon Fitzgerald, Vice President IT

Sharon joined TOTE Resources, as the Vice President of IT in June 2014.  She has over 30 years experience in IT.

Prior to joining TOTE Resources, Fitzgerald was the VP of Solutions Delivery for a consulting company developing quality solutions for companies ranging from start-ups through Fortune 50 companies. Before that, Sharon was the CEO of People for Earth a global non-profit startup focused on sustainability in Washington, DC.  Sharon was a VP of IT at QVC.  During her tenure at QVC she led various IT functions including remote technology services for the company’s call centers and distribution centers, help desk, desktop support, and shared services. She was also responsible for the IT department’s quality assurance group, PMO, application architecture, integration services and database modeling teams.  She supported QVC’s transformation from legacy to enterprise applications setting standards, best practices all while implementing portfolio management and a consistent systems development lifecycle.

Sharon came to QVC after 14 years with the Vanguard Group.  At Vanguard, she held IT management roles in Applications Development and Data Architecture supporting Client Services and Retirement Service business units.  Her specialty was in strategic program management and rescuing multi-million dollar failing IT projects.

Sharon earned an MBA from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and her B.S. in Management from West Chester University in PA.

Gene Gerrard, Human Resources Lead

Gene Gerrard brings over 25 years of HR leadership experience, having worked extensively in human resources throughout the Pacific Northwest.

As Vice President of Human Resources at TOTE Maritime Alaska, Gerrard is responsible for the development of HR policies, practices and programs to make sure they support our business strategy, shared values and culture. Previously, he was the top HR leader at SeaBright Holdings, Inc. He has also served as Vice President at Drake Beam Morin, Inc., a worldwide provider of human resources services for recruitment, training, organizational development and change management.

Gerrard received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Gonzaga University and has done graduate work in business administration at Eastern Washington University. He is a long time member of the HR Executive Forum and the Society for Human Resources Management.
